Transformation of Facilities Operations at Rolls-Royce, Rolls-Royce and Mitie

The UK Operations team delivers facilities services for Rolls-Royce in the UK and comprises representatives from the in-house Group Property team and supply partner Mitie.

In 2018, they embarked on a journey together to transform FM delivery to ensure the workspaces they managed created inspiring environments for Rolls-Royce colleagues to pioneer world leading power systems.

A new FM culture was forged by a steering group from both firms of senior executives with representatives from operations, procurement, governance and commercial sectors. Their guiding principle was a consistent approach and clarity at all business levels.  Silo working turned into a unitary model to embed a one-team culture; the UK was split into 10 clusters with a facilities manager leading the team. Five KPIs governed everything.

The change led to an 85 per cent reduction in quotes and approvals for the FMP budget, and teams working more efficiently. A new data visualisation tool enabled both teams to access to live data at building level – driving more efficiencies.

The judges were impressed at how by re-imagining a client – service partnership, Mitie and Rolls Royce have shown how both organisations can benefit from identifying very specific performance goals and aligning their business.
